You
have probably heard about the 20 year curse and know what that is. But there is
a different curse that affects the presidency that you probably have no idea
about. There is another curse that is mentioned in the complete book of US
presidents that it seems not even google knows about (last I checked). What is
it? I might as well explain.
You
see, every 50 years, a major scandal hits the White House. It started with one
president and has occurred two more times around the same time period. I’ll
explain more towards the end how this is relevant again today, but you can
probably guess.
Ulysses
S Grant had a whole ton of controversies happen when he was president. People
think of him as such a good general during the Civil War (which he was) that
they don’t seem to know just how terrible a president he was. He doesn’t
deserve to be on money, especially an amount as high as the 50 dollar bill. Now
it might have been various people in his administration who did one scandal
after another. Indeed, Grant had two terms as president and could have had a
third one after the Hayes administration. But if presidential scholars rank
your presidency as a failure, then you probably are one.
Warren
G Harding is widely considered by many to be the worst ever president. If he
hadn’t died of mysterious causes, he probably would have been impeached. And
his problems were caused by his so called friends. The Teapot Dome scandal is
what he’s remembered. No good person is remembered for a scandal.
Richard
M Nixon is actually similar in a lot of ways to Trump. Richard hated the press,
had many backroom deals with people, and faced off against a Democrat in an
election where a group of people had hacked into the Democratic headquarters.
In Richard’s case, he was responsible for his team breaking into the Watergate
complex and digging up dirt on his opponent. People don’t seem to know the full
or real story behind his resignation. It had nothing to do with wiped tapes.
But I guess they can think that as long as they aren’t teaching history.
Why
is this important now? Some would notice that the 50 year curse is set to
strike again. I’ve even heard of something else that could be worse relating to
80 year intervals set to happen in the near future. But that’s a different post
entirely. Whether or not Trump is guilty of anything, we do know that people in
his administration seem to be embroiled in one scandal after another. Maybe he
is guilty of nothing. We know that the DNC headquarters was hacked by the
Russians with the information relating to released just before the Democratic
national convention. Trump did call for them to hack into Hilary Clinton’s
emails. But there is shady business going on and I thought that I would do a
reminder of this and the scandals that came before it.
I
might as well finish writing this post as there isn’t much else to say. There
have been scandals outside of these 50 year intervals, but these are just what
could be considered the most notable ones. I read about this in the book
mentioned previously in this post and it has a warning that we should brace
ourselves for the early 2020s. Will it happen again?
