This is kind of outdated by now, but the moto of my blogs might as well be better late than never which includes the occasional post that should have been up sooner than it really was (this isn’t one of them).
Anyways,
after covid happened, it became apparent to some the outright racism going on. But
even long before that, the WHO wanted to make sure that pandemics were not
named by the location that they came from. They corrected that mistake early
with this one. But they did still cause issues with naming varients at one
point from their location and not just a Greek letter instead. I’m glad that
the policy is in effect and can only hope that it stays and is better enforced
in the future.
